Abstract

This article undertakes a comparative study to explore the enduring legacy of caste in modern India, drawing inspiration from the seminal work of sociologist André Béteille. The objectives of this study are twofold: firstly, to critically analyze Béteille's theoretical framework on caste and its applicability in understanding contemporary Indian society; and secondly, to compare his insights with recent research and scholarship on caste dynamics in India. Employing a qualitative research approach, this study synthesizes existing literature, case studies, and empirical evidence to shed light on the multifaceted dimensions of caste and its implications for social cohesion, economic development, and political representation. Key findings reveal the persistent inequalities, discrimination, and social stratification perpetuated by the caste system, alongside emerging challenges and opportunities for promoting social justice and equality. By elucidating the complexities of caste dynamics and interrogating the relevance of Béteille's work in the current socio-political context, this study contributes to ongoing scholarly debates and informs policy interventions aimed at addressing caste-based disparities in India.
